BOCHICA
Gray Stallion
1/70 - 11/7/85
Guazipungo x La Diana
Bochica, meaning "King of All Civililizations,"stood at 14.1 hh and
his breeder was Don Carlos Quintero of Buga in Western Colombia. Bochica's
parents were not well know horses, but their parents and grandparents were
notable and known as part of the foundation horses in Colombia.
Bochica's color was not good nor desired
then, but his conformation was impressive as was his gait which was natural and
very fino with low action - he was short in extension more so than most of
the other horses at that time. Shortness was his distinction.
His only fault was a side to side movement in the croup.
In a show in 1973 in Buga Anfitrion was Champion with Bochica Reserve. In 1974
Juan David Ochoa bought Bochica in partnership. In 1976 Bochica was Champion to
Resorte IV, owned then by Guillermo Santaella, who won Reserve. Bochica was sold
to a three way partnership. and competed against his closest rival,
Contrapunto. The duels between these great stallions,
Bochica and Contrapunto, are among the most memorable rivalries in the history
of the Colombian Paso Fino. In 1978 Resorte IV joined the competition between
Bochica and Contrapunto - the competition was so close the judges chose to ride
each horse to declare the winner which was Contrapunto, Reserve Bochica, and
third Resorte IV. In 1979 in Bogota, an immense crowd of spectators was treated
to a final competition between the three greats - this time being ridden by
their owners. Contrapunto was ridden by Victor Quintero, Bochica by
Patricia Silva and Resorte IV by Don Fabio Ochoa. Bochica was the winner
followed by Contrapunto then Resorte IV. In Manizales in 1983, Resorte IV was
victorious over Bochica in a final test of riding side by side. In Puerto Rico
at the 1984 World Cup, Bochica was the Reserve World Champion behind
Contrapunto. In all of their meetings, Contrapunto won three times, with Bochica
beating Contrapunto only once. These stallions competed in what is
referred to as the "Golden Era" of Paso fino horses - the 60's to the
80's. Of the three horses Contrapunto was considered the powerful
one and the most beautiful; Bochica more fino, the best to ride, and
extraordinarily responsive to the reins; and Resorte of course, the best
reproducer with many of his offspring following in his footsteps.
Some of Bochica's most notable offspring are Postin, sire of World Champion
Petrolero del Juncal, and National Champion Postal. Aristocracia, an
International Champion with national titles in the United States, Colombia and
Venezuela. Aristocracia is also the mother of La Ardita, a National Champion in
Colombia.
